Point Arena

Point Arena Lighthouse along coastal bluff and ocean

Jeff Kan Lee

Formerly known as Punta Arena “Sandy Point” is a small city tucked away along the breathtaking Mendocino coast in Northern California. The Wharf Master’s Inn is just steps from the ocean and has a private hiking trailhead where you can explore lush wildflower meadows atop coastal bluffs.

Whether your idea of relaxation is watching and listening to the ocean waves wash ashore, or going hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, fishing, crabbing, surfing or whale watching, you can do it all in Point Arena.

If you want to venture through town, there is a vibrant local community, markets, thrift shops, restaurants, movie theater, an art gallery, a casino, and even an animal preserve that is dedicated to preserving critically endangered species from Africa.

Historic Point Arena

THE WHARF AND PIER

The first wharf was built in 1866 and Point Arena served as the main Mendocino coast shipping port for agricultural products. With the dangerous coastline, a lighthouse was constructed (and then rebuilt after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake).

Now you’ll find local fisherman at the pier looking for their daily catch, and surfers catching the waves. Visitors can also fish from the pier without a fishing license.

HIKING STORNETTA

The Wharf Master’s Inn has a private trailhead from which you can embark on a breathtaking hike along the coastal bluffs from the pier all the way to the Point Arena Lighthouse. Watch for sunbathing seals, go for a jog along the coastal trails, and feel the ocean breeze.

ANNUAL FESTIVALS

The Cove hosts the annual Independence Weekend street fair and an impressive fireworks display by the City of Point Arena, the annual Fisherman’s Harbor & Seafood Festival.

LIGHTHOUSE

The Point Arena Lighthouse is a historical landmark that you can climb the spiral staircase to the top of (115 feet!). Visit the museum to learn more about Point Arena’s iconic tower.

DINE LA TERRIOR

Many restaurants feature the local produce from the farming community and the seafood freshly caught by the local fishing fleet.

ARENA THEATER

Is a restored 1928 vaudevillian community ran, non-profit film and live entertainment venue. Watch the latest movie or rock out to the bands touring in town.
